How We Guide Reepot Laser Aftercare in the Clinic

After lentigo is removed with a laser, how you handle cold compresses and DuoDERM care determines how the recovery period comes to a close.

The procedure of removing lentigo with a laser does not itself take long. Rather, the stage that decides the outcome is what follows: the recovery period, when the treated area heals and new skin comes up. After clearing lentigo with the Reepot laser in the clinic, the thing I spend the longest explaining to patients is exactly this recovery-period care. I often see cases in which the final result differs depending on how the recovery process was managed, even after the same treatment. Today I will lay out that care method in order.

The first couple of hours after treatment: why start with cold compresses?

For an hour or two right after treatment, the area the laser has passed over may throb or sting. The first thing I recommend at this point is a cold compress using a cold ice pack. Please continue for roughly two to three hours, in the direction of lowering the skin temperature.

However, I recommend avoiding putting ice directly on the skin. It is safer to wrap it in a clean towel before applying. Icing helps soothe sensitized skin and reduce swelling.

Why we postpone face washing on the day of treatment

We apply DuoDERM, a regenerative patch, to the treated area. It takes some time for this patch to adhere completely to the skin. If you wash your face on the same day, however, the patch, which has not yet settled in place, may come off.

So I recommend not washing your face on the day of treatment. From the next day, you can wash gently with lukewarm water, and after that you can continue not only your daily life but also light activities such as swimming without difficulty.

Skin in the recovery period is more sensitive than usual. During this time, it is best to put off, as far as possible, activities that raise skin temperature, because redness may last longer than expected. There are individual differences, but I recommend avoiding the following kinds of stimulation during the recovery period.

  • Strong UV exposure
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Spicy and irritating foods
  • Saunas, jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouse saunas), and half-body baths
  • Showering with hot water
  • Excessive stress

How to respond if your face turns red

If your face flushes and turns red during recovery, you can use the cold compress I mentioned earlier again. Cool the area with a towel in between, or let your skin calm down in a cool environment.

Makeup also requires some attention during this period. While DuoDERM is applied, it is important to avoid heavy makeup. Around the patch, the adhesive makes washing and cleansing tricky, so cosmetic residue is easily left behind.

When cosmetics stick to a tacky area, even a product that is normally non-irritating can become more concentrated in that area and irritate the skin. This is why I recommend keeping makeup light during the recovery period.

So during the recovery period, it is best to minimize skin irritation with simple makeup. Please choose gentle, low-irritation skincare products as well. In the end, the key to care is protecting the DuoDERM

DuoDERM covers and protects the treated area and helps the skin regenerate. So the main thread of recovery-period care lies in keeping this patch well in place. Please be careful that the patch does not lift or come off due to physical friction. Laid out in order, recovery-period care is as follows.

  1. On the day of treatment, soothe the area with cold compresses and postpone face washing.
  2. From the next day, begin washing with lukewarm water and light activities.
  3. Throughout the recovery period, avoid UV and heat stimulation and keep the patch on.
  4. Continue with gentle, light makeup and skincare.

Lifestyle habits that affect the speed of regeneration

Sufficient sleep and rest are indispensable for skin regeneration. While you sleep soundly, the skin recovers naturally, and the speed of regeneration picks up as well. I recommend keeping regular lifestyle habits while relieving excessive stress.

While the patch is on, please be careful not to scratch or rub the area. And do not forget to avoid strong UV when you go out. If you are curious about how to tell seborrheic keratosis from lentigo, my post summarizing the criteria for distinguishing seborrheic keratosis from lentigo will help, and if you are curious about care once recovery has progressed a little further, my post on care and regeneration two weeks after removing DuoDERM will help.
